Mechanism

Revision surgery removes or replaces the existing implant, addresses capsular contracture by capsulectomy or capsulotomy, corrects implant malposition, treats animation deformity by changing implant plane, and may involve fat grafting or tissue reinforcement with acellular dermal matrix (ADM) for improved outcomes.

Effects

Resolution of capsular contracture, correction of implant asymmetry or malposition, improved breast shape and feel, treatment of rippling or implant visibility, and restoration of natural breast appearance.

Duration

Permanent for structural corrections. Implants may need replacement every 10-15 years. Capsular contracture recurrence possible.

Recovery

Recovery similar to or longer than primary surgery. Compression garment for 4-6 weeks. Swelling and bruising for 2-4 weeks. Restricted arm movement for 2 weeks. Return to normal activities at 4-6 weeks.

Side Effects

Higher complication risk than primary surgery. Capsular contracture recurrence, infection, hematoma, seroma, implant rupture, asymmetry, changes in nipple sensation, and scarring. More complex surgery increases anesthesia risks.
