A surgery that lifts the drooping forehead and eyebrows upward and secures them in an elevated position.

Overview

Brow lift surgery predominantly uses an endoscopic approach through 3-5 small incisions within the scalp. It lifts drooping eyebrows, improves forehead wrinkles, and weakens the glabellar frown muscles (corrugator). Often combined with upper blepharoplasty for comprehensive upper facial rejuvenation.

Mechanism

Through small scalp incisions, an endoscope guides the release of periosteal attachments and the arcus marginalis along the orbital rim. The forehead soft tissue is elevated superiorly, and the brows are secured in the lifted position using endotine fixation devices, screws, or sutures to the skull periosteum. The corrugator and procerus muscles may be partially resected to reduce frown lines. The result is a lifted brow position and smoother forehead.

Lifted eyebrow position, reduced forehead wrinkles and horizontal lines, softened glabellar frown lines, more open and alert upper facial appearance, and rejuvenated forehead contour.

Duration

5-10 years; some descent occurs over time but from a higher baseline

Recovery

Swelling and bruising for 1-2 weeks. Scalp numbness for weeks to months. Endotine devices (if used) dissolve over 6-12 months. Head elevation and cold compresses recommended. Return to work at 1-2 weeks. Final result at 2-3 months.

Side Effects

Temporary swelling, bruising, scalp numbness, and itching. Risk of hair loss along incisions, asymmetric brow position, over-elevation (surprised look), hematoma, infection, and nerve injury. Forehead heaviness during early recovery is normal.
