Collagen Booster

Collagen BoosterTreatment

A collective term for procedures that use biodegradable polymers such as PLLA, PCL, and PDLLA to stimulate the body's own collagen production.

Overview

Collagen boosters are treatments that inject biodegradable polymers into the skin to induce neocollagenesis. Representative products include Sculptra (PLLA), Ellansé (PCL), and Juvelook (PDLLA+HA), each with distinct properties and characteristics. Unlike HA fillers that provide immediate volume, collagen boosters gradually build natural volume through the body's own collagen production over several months.

Mechanism

Biodegradable polymer microspheres are injected into the deep dermis or subcutaneous layer. The microspheres trigger a controlled foreign body response, attracting fibroblasts that produce new collagen around the particles. As the polymer gradually degrades, it is replaced by the patient's own collagen matrix. Each polymer type has a different degradation timeline: PLLA (18-24 months), PCL (24-48 months), PDLLA (12-18 months).

Effects

Gradual volume restoration through natural collagen synthesis, improved skin firmness and elasticity, wrinkle and fold reduction, facial contour improvement, and long-lasting natural-looking results.

Duration

1-3 years depending on product (PLLA 18-24 months, PCL 2-4 years, PDLLA 12-18 months)

Recovery

Mild swelling, redness, and tenderness for 2-5 days. Bruising possible. Massage of treated areas may be recommended (especially for Sculptra: 5-5-5 rule). Avoid excessive heat and strenuous exercise for 24-48 hours.

Side Effects

Temporary swelling, redness, bruising, and tenderness. Possible nodule or granuloma formation (especially if injected too superficially or without proper massage). Results take time to appear. Individual response varies.

Price Range

200,000-600,000 KRW per vial depending on product

Target Audience

Those seeking gradual, natural-looking volume restoration, those wanting longer-lasting results than HA fillers, and those with volume loss due to aging.
