An FDA-approved non-invasive fat reduction device by Allergan (now AbbVie, USA) that selectively destroys fat cells through cryolipolysis cooling technology.

Overview

CoolSculpting applies controlled cooling to fat deposits, freezing fat cells to trigger apoptosis (natural cell death) without damaging surrounding tissue. FDA-cleared for 9 body areas including abdomen, flanks, thighs, chin, and arms. Results appear gradually over 2-3 months as the body eliminates dead fat cells.

Mechanism

Cryolipolysis: a vacuum applicator draws tissue between cooling panels maintained at -11 to +5 degrees Celsius for 35-75 minutes. Fat cells are more susceptible to cold than surrounding tissues. Controlled cooling crystallizes lipids within fat cells, triggering apoptosis. Dead cells are processed by macrophages and eliminated through the lymphatic system over 2-3 months.

Effects

Non-surgical fat reduction of 20-25% per treatment area per session, improved body contour, reduced love handles, double chin reduction, and gradual natural-looking fat loss.

Duration

Permanent fat cell elimination. Results visible at 1-3 months, final results at 3-6 months. 1-3 sessions per area recommended 6-8 weeks apart.

Recovery

Minimal downtime. Temporary numbness, redness, swelling, and bruising at treatment site for 1-2 weeks. Mild cramping or tingling for several days. Normal activities can resume immediately.

Side Effects

Temporary numbness, redness, swelling, bruising, tingling, and cramping. Rare paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH) where fat increases instead of decreasing (0.005-0.39% incidence). Mild to moderate pain during and after treatment.
