Overview

Functional rhinoplasty includes septoplasty, inferior turbinate reduction, and nasal valve reconstruction, often performed simultaneously with cosmetic rhinoplasty. The cause of nasal obstruction is accurately diagnosed with CT and endoscopy before planning the surgery. National health insurance coverage may apply in some cases.

Mechanism

Septoplasty straightens the deviated septum by removing or reshaping obstructing cartilage and bone. Turbinate reduction shrinks enlarged inferior turbinates via radiofrequency, microdebrider, or partial resection. Valve repair strengthens collapsed nasal valves with spreader grafts or suture techniques. Diagnosis via CT scan and nasal endoscopy.

Effects

Improved nasal airflow and breathing, resolution of chronic nasal obstruction, reduced snoring, improved sleep quality, and correction of structural causes of nasal congestion.

Duration

Permanent for septoplasty. Turbinate reduction may require repeat treatment after several years if regrowth occurs.

Recovery

Nasal packing removed at 1-2 days. Splint for 5-7 days. Breathing improvement noticeable within 1-2 weeks. Full recovery at 4-6 weeks. Avoid blowing nose for 2 weeks.

Side Effects

Temporary nasal congestion, bleeding, and crusting. Rarely, septal perforation, adhesions (synechiae), numbness of upper teeth, or recurrence of deviation. May be covered by national health insurance when medically indicated.

1,500,000-4,000,000 KRW (may be partially covered by insurance for functional indications).
