Overview

Inverted nipples are caused by short or fibrotic milk ducts beneath the nipple that pull it inward. Mechanism

The shortened lactiferous ducts and fibrous tissue bands that pull the nipple inward are identified and released. Internal sutures (purse-string or mattress sutures) secure the nipple in the everted position. Tissue flaps may be created to fill the space beneath the nipple and prevent re-inversion. Techniques vary from duct-preserving to duct-dividing depending on severity.
