Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic SurgerySurgery

A surgery that simultaneously osteotomizes and repositions both the upper jaw (maxilla) and lower jaw (mandible) to correct malocclusion and facial asymmetry.

Overview

Orthognathic surgery treats skeletal malocclusion (prognathism, retrognathia, facial asymmetry, open bite) by performing Le Fort I osteotomy (maxilla) and sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) or intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) of the mandible. It requires coordination with orthodontics and careful surgical planning using 3D CT and cephalometric analysis.

Mechanism

Orthognathic surgery repositions the upper jaw (Le Fort I osteotomy), lower jaw (bilateral sagittal split osteotomy), or both (two-jaw surgery) to correct skeletal malocclusion. 3D CT planning and surgical guides ensure precise bone movement. Titanium plates and screws fix bones in the new position. Often combined with pre- and post-operative orthodontics.

Effects

Correction of facial asymmetry, improved bite and occlusion, improved facial proportions, resolution of functional chewing and speech issues, and significant improvement in facial aesthetics.

Duration

Permanent. Bone healing complete at 6-8 weeks. Orthodontic treatment may continue for 6-18 months post-surgery. Final facial shape stabilizes at 6-12 months.

Recovery

Significant swelling for 2-4 weeks. Jaw wiring or elastic bands for 2-6 weeks. Liquid diet progressing to soft diet over 4-6 weeks. Numbness of lower lip and chin for weeks to months. Return to work at 2-4 weeks.

Side Effects

Prolonged numbness (temporary or rarely permanent), infection, relapse of jaw position, TMJ issues, tooth root damage, malocclusion requiring further orthodontics, and significant recovery period. Requires experienced maxillofacial surgeon.

Price Range

8,000,000-20,000,000 KRW depending on single or two-jaw surgery.

Target Audience

Those with skeletal malocclusion (underbite, overbite, facial asymmetry), those with functional chewing or speech issues from jaw misalignment, and those seeking significant facial structural improvement.
