Overview

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) involves precisely injecting special pigment into the scalp of hair loss areas to create follicle dots that mimic the appearance of closely cropped hair. Used for hair loss coverage, scar concealment, hairline definition, and adding visual density between existing hair for a fuller appearance.

Mechanism

Specialized pigment is deposited into the dermal-epidermal junction using fine needles calibrated for scalp skin thickness. Each dot replicates the appearance of a hair follicle opening. The pigment is formulated specifically for scalp use with appropriate particle size and color to match natural hair follicle appearance. Unlike body tattoos, SMP uses a stippling technique with smaller needles and shallower depth for a natural follicle-dot appearance.

Side Effects

Temporary redness, tenderness, and scabbing. Color may appear too dark initially before settling. Risk of color migration, unnatural appearance if performed by inexperienced practitioner. Allergic reaction to pigment rare but possible. Results are semi-permanent and will fade over time.
