Scar Reconstruction

Scar ReconstructionSurgery

A reconstructive surgery that corrects severe scars from trauma, burns, or surgery to improve both function and appearance.

Overview

Scar reconstruction includes scar excision and re-closure (scar revision), Z-plasty or W-plasty to redirect scars along skin tension lines, tissue expansion using tissue expanders followed by reconstruction, and flap surgery. The approach is selected based on scar type, location, and severity, with the goal of converting a conspicuous scar into one that blends with natural skin lines.

Mechanism

Multiple techniques are selected based on scar type: excision and re-closure for linear scars, Z-plasty or W-plasty to redirect scar tension lines, tissue expansion for large scars, local flaps for complex reconstruction, skin grafting for extensive tissue loss, and laser or microneedle RF for surface improvement.

Effects

Improved scar appearance and texture, reduced scar width and elevation, better color match, improved function if scar restricts movement, and enhanced self-confidence through cosmetic improvement.

Duration

Permanent for surgical corrections. Laser and RF treatments require 3-5 sessions at 4-8 week intervals. Final scar maturation at 6-18 months.

Recovery

Varies by technique. Excision: stitches removed at 5-14 days. Flaps: 2-4 weeks recovery. Laser: 5-7 days redness. All techniques require sun protection for optimal scar healing.

Side Effects

New scarring from revision surgery, infection, wound dehiscence, scar recurrence or widening, hyperpigmentation, and variable results depending on individual healing response.

Price Range

500,000-5,000,000 KRW depending on technique and extent.

Target Audience

Those with disfiguring scars from trauma, surgery, or burns, those with functional scar contractures, and those seeking cosmetic improvement of visible scars.
