Overview
Sculptra is an FDA-approved PLLA (poly-L-lactic acid) based collagen stimulator. Unlike conventional HA fillers that provide immediate volume, Sculptra stimulates the body's own collagen production, with volume gradually building over 2–3 months. It is widely used for overall facial volume loss, hollow cheeks, temple hollowing, and nasolabial folds.
Mechanism
When PLLA microparticles are injected subcutaneously, they trigger a foreign body response in the tissue, stimulating fibroblasts to produce new collagen (primarily Types I and III). The PLLA is gradually broken down and absorbed by the body over several months, while the generated collagen maintains the volume.
Effects
Typically performed in 2–3 sessions at 3–4 week intervals. Final results appear over 2–3 months after the last session as collagen forms. Effects last approximately 2 years or more depending on the individual.
Duration
30–40 minutes per session.
Recovery
Normal activities can resume immediately. Massage the injection site 5 times daily for 5 minutes over 5 days (the 5-5-5 rule) to ensure even distribution. Swelling subsides in 1–3 days; bruising in 3–7 days.
Side Effects
Swelling, bruising, and injection site pain are common. Nodules may form, particularly from insufficient massage or injection too close to the surface. Avoid use in thin-skinned areas such as under the eyes and lips.
