Alexandrite Laser

Overview

The alexandrite laser uses the 755nm wavelength, offering high melanin selectivity and moderate penetration depth for both pigment treatment and hair removal. In Q-switched mode, it treats spots and freckles; in long-pulse mode, it performs effective hair removal. The 755nm wavelength sits between ruby (694nm) and Nd:YAG (1064nm), providing a balanced profile of melanin absorption and tissue penetration.

Mechanism

At 755nm, the laser energy is well absorbed by melanin while having moderate tissue penetration. In Q-switched mode, nanosecond pulses selectively fragment melanin for pigment treatment. In long-pulse mode, sustained energy delivery heats the melanin-rich hair follicle shaft and bulge area, causing thermal damage to the follicular stem cells for permanent hair reduction. The wavelength is particularly effective for treating brown and black hair.
