Laser Hair Removal

Overview

Laser hair removal irradiates specific wavelength lasers (alexandrite 755nm, diode 800-810nm, Nd:YAG 1064nm, etc.) onto the skin to concentrate energy on melanin within hair follicles. By destroying the follicular stem cells (bulge area) and dermal papilla through thermal damage, it achieves permanent hair reduction. Multiple sessions are needed to treat hairs in different growth cycle phases.

Mechanism

The laser wavelength is selected based on skin type and hair characteristics to target follicular melanin while protecting the epidermis. The melanin in the hair shaft and matrix absorbs laser energy, converting it to heat that spreads to the surrounding follicular structures including the bulge (stem cells) and dermal papilla. When these structures reach critical temperatures, they are permanently damaged, preventing future hair growth. Cooling devices protect the epidermis during treatment.

Recovery
