Milia

MiliaTreatment

Small 1-2mm white cysts formed by trapped keratin beneath the epidermis, simply removed by extraction, laser, or electrocautery.

Overview

Milia are 1-2mm white or yellowish-white cysts formed when keratin becomes trapped in a capsule beneath the epidermis. Common around the eyes, cheeks, and forehead, they rarely resolve spontaneously and usually persist. Treatment involves extraction using a sterile needle (18-gauge), CO2 laser vaporization, or electrocautery, all of which are simple outpatient procedures.

Mechanism

A sterile needle or lancet is used to create a tiny opening in the overlying epidermis, and the encapsulated keratin contents are expressed. Alternatively, CO2 laser precisely vaporizes the thin epidermal roof to expose and remove the cyst contents. Electrocautery uses thermal energy to open and destroy the cyst wall. All methods aim to completely remove the keratin capsule to prevent recurrence.

Effects

Complete removal of milia cysts, smooth skin surface restoration, improved appearance of affected areas, and immediate visible results.

Duration

Single session for most cases; new milia may form over time requiring occasional maintenance

Recovery

Minimal downtime. Tiny pinpoint wounds heal in 3-5 days. Mild redness at extraction sites for 1-2 days. No bandaging usually needed. Makeup possible from the next day. Gentle skincare recommended.

Side Effects

Minimal risks. Possible mild redness and tiny scabbing at extraction sites. Very rarely, minor scarring or infection. New milia may develop in the same area over time (not a recurrence of treated lesions).

Price Range

10,000-50,000 KRW depending on number of lesions

Target Audience

Those with visible milia (white bumps) around the eyes, cheeks, or forehead, and those wanting quick, simple removal of these benign cysts.
