Overview
Fraxel pioneered fractional laser technology using 1550 nm (non-ablative) and 1927 nm (superficial thulium) wavelengths. It treats acne scars, pores, pigmentation, fine wrinkles, and stretch marks. Fraxel Dual combines both wavelengths. The brand name became synonymous with fractional laser treatment.
Mechanism
The laser creates thousands of microscopic thermal columns (MTZ) while leaving surrounding tissue intact. 1550 nm penetrates deeper for collagen remodeling (scars, wrinkles). 1927 nm targets the superficial epidermis for pigment and texture. Intact tissue enables rapid healing versus full ablation.
Effects
Acne scar improvement, pore reduction, melasma and pigmentation treatment, fine wrinkle reduction, stretch mark improvement, and overall skin texture enhancement.
Duration
3-5 sessions at 4-6 week intervals for scars. 2-3 sessions for pigmentation. Results improve for 3-6 months after final session.
Recovery
Redness, swelling, and bronzing for 5-7 days. Skin feels rough and dry during healing. Makeup possible after 2-3 days. Full social recovery in 5-7 days. Sun protection for 4+ weeks.
Side Effects
Temporary redness, swelling, bronzing, dryness. Risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in darker skin. Rare infection, scarring, herpes reactivation. Pain managed with topical anesthesia.
