Laser Toning

Overview

Laser toning is a procedure that irradiates Q-switched or long-pulse Nd:YAG 1064nm laser at subcellular-level low fluence repeatedly. The 1064nm wavelength can reach melanin deep in the dermis, making it particularly effective for deep pigmentation such as melasma. Gradual pigment reduction is achieved through multiple sessions with minimal surface damage.

Mechanism

Low-fluence 1064nm laser energy penetrates to the deep dermis where it is selectively absorbed by melanin. The subcellular energy level fragments melanosomes within melanocytes without causing cell rupture, avoiding the inflammatory cascade that can trigger rebound pigmentation. The fragmented pigment is gradually cleared by dermal macrophages over multiple sessions.
