Syringoma

Overview

Syringoma is a benign skin tumor derived from eccrine sweat gland ducts. It typically appears as multiple 1-3mm skin-colored to yellowish papules around the lower eyelids, with cosmetic concern being the primary motivation for treatment. Located within the dermis, it is more challenging to treat than surface lesions, requiring precise ablation to the correct depth.

Mechanism

Treatment involves precise ablation of the dermal tumor tissue using CO2 laser, Er:YAG laser, or RF (radiofrequency) needle devices. The energy source vaporizes or coagulates the tumor tissue layer by layer. Due to the intradermal location, treatment must reach sufficient depth for complete removal while minimizing scarring risk. RF needle approaches (similar to Agnes) can selectively target individual lesions with minimal surface damage.

Removal or significant reduction of syringoma papules, improved periorbital skin appearance, smoother under-eye area, and cosmetic improvement.

1-3 sessions depending on lesion number and depth; 4-8 week intervals; some lesions may recur requiring maintenance

Recovery

Pinpoint crusting at treatment sites for 5-10 days. Mild redness and swelling around the eye area for 2-3 days. Gentle wound care with ointment recommended. Makeup possible after crusts fall off. Sun protection important.

Side Effects

Temporary crusting, redness, and swelling. Risk of scarring (atrophic or hypertrophic) if treated too aggressively. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation possible. Recurrence common as new lesions can develop over time. Complete eradication is difficult.
